Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis

Adolescent Programs at Scol-Rx

Children and adolescents with scoliosis can sacrifice quality of life to conservative treatment for many years.  Therefore, at Scolrx, we feel it is our task to offer comfortable approaches with the best possible effects in the shortest amount of time with the least amount of side effects. Below is an overview of those approaches.

Modified Schroth Best Practice – 12-16 hour intensive

For our patient’s with mild curves or for those at high risk for progression of curves (family history, young age with skeletal immaturity at diagnosis) the good news is that a complete Schroth program may not be necessary. It has been shown that patient’s with mild curves treated with Schroth Best Practice™ posture and daily living modifications have either halted or reduced their curves. We strongly believe that being proactive is much smarter than taking a risk and waiting to see if things get worse. We teach the child awareness and self correction in order that they can help their curves themselves. This course includes the following:

* Physiologic – a technique used to mobilize the spine in the sagittal (front to back) plane

* ADL’s (activities of daily living) – correction of the spine during dynamic and static activities to increase posture awareness and relieve asymmetric loading of the main scoliotic curvesit

* 3D Made Easy – instruction on posture modifications and beginning rotational, corrective breathing

* Spinal Mobilizations – hands on therapy taught to family member or friend to keep soft tissue pliable and help provide derotation and deflexion of the spine

* MANUALWritten Instructions, Individualized Pictures and Movies to take Home

High Mild – Low Moderate Curves 20-30°:

Full Schroth Best Practice – 18-22 hour intensive

This program is for adolescents with curvatures between 20° and 30° and includes all the Best Practice techniques as well as appropriate curve specific Schroth exercises. Problem specific traditional exercise may be added if deemed necessary.

* Schroth Curve-Pattern Specific Scoliosis Exercises – Schroth method exercises that use corrective rotational breathing techniques, chosen for each individual patient’s curves and needs.

* Specific Area Exercise -adjunct exercise, only if it is determined to be necessary, for any scoliosis related need  (e.g. hamstring stretching)
